General Music
General Music classes meet once every 6-day cycle for grades Pre-K through 6, every day for 10 weeks in grades 7 and 8, and every other day for the high school elective. General music allows students to experience music as an art form, a form of expression, as well as become literate in the reading of pitch and rhythm. See the list of classes below to take a closer look!
Pre-K
in Pre-K, we learn all about steady beat, fast and slow, loud and soft, and moving to music. We start every music class with singing games and a movement activity. Soon, we will start applying musical concepts to playing basic percussion instruments such as egg shakers and rhythm sticks.
Kindergarten
In kindergarten, we reinforce concepts such as steady beat, loud and soft, and fast and slow. Every music class we play a rhythm game claled Sweet Beats and sing lots of songs, Our favorite new game to play is called Doggy Doggy, Where's your Bone? and it teaches us to use our best singing voice both in a group and while we sing alone.
1st Grade
We are learning all about rhythm! We know about time signature, quarter notes, quarter rests, half notes, and eighth notes. During music c;ass, we compose and perform songs using our new knowledge of rhythm!
2nd Grade
In 2nd grade, we learn all about pitch and melody! Last year, we learned all about rhythm and note duration, now we can learn that each note has a different pitch making either a high or low sound. Since this can be tricky, we relate each note to a different color or the rainbow! Miss Rockwell even lets us compose using boomwhackers and bells, that match the colors we use to put notes on the staff!
3rd Grade
In 3rd grade, we are learning how to play the recorder! We are combining our knowledge of pitch and rhythm to learn how to play an instrument. Each class we become more independent musicians by performing in our practice groups.
4th Grade
We love centers! Quite often we break into centers to play boomwhackers, games using technology, and activities to develop teamwork while refining our skills of both reading pitch and rhythm in standard music notation.
5th Grade
We are on board for Mission Composition! We are taking our knowledge to the next step and composing music on our own! We can correctly use standard music notation and combine our music literacy skill set to perform our composition with our peers! We have worked on developing our own orff ensembles in class to work on each sustaining our own part within a larger group.
6th Grade
In 6th grade, we are learning all about composers! Each student is researching a composer and will compile a presentation for the class.
7th Grade
In 7th grade, we only have music for ten weeks. During this time, we learn about different genres of music, musical theater, and explore the role of music in our own lives.
Intro to Music
Intro to Music is a high school level music elective course. In this class, we focus on a variety of topics of interest to students using an online music classroom entitled musicfirst.
